Story: Death and dying

Memorial service programme (2nd of 2)

Memorial service programme

The memorial service for Betty Roberts, at the Old Stone House, Cashmere, Christchurch, on 22 September 2008, brought together family, friends and members of community organisations. Tributes were offered by friends who told stories about her life as a child and young woman, by her husband and other family members, by neighbours in the local community in which she had fought for the restoration of the Old Stone House, by fellow activists in the women’s and peace movements, and by a member of Parliament. Their stories included amusing anecdotes as well as recognition of her achievements in many different fields.

Reverend George Armstrong, a close friend of the Roberts family, facilitated this celebration of her life. Like many memorial and funeral service programmes in the 21st century, this programme includes a recent photo of Betty Roberts and a photo of her as a young woman, about 70 years earlier.
