Spaniard Joseph Soler produced award-winning wines in the 1880s and 1890s. Soler planted his first vineyard in Bell Street, Whanganui, in 1866. His first wines were made with his own grapes and grapes grown by Whanganui Māori at their settlements on the Whanganui River. This 1903 advertisement in the Wanganui Herald outlines the numerous awards his wines received.
