Story: Political parties

Newlywed coalition

Newlywed coalition

The coalition between the Reform and Liberal parties was prompted by the growing strength of a third party, Labour. In 1936 the two parties merged to become the National Party, which was first elected to government in 1949. It would remain the governing party for all but six of the next 35 years.
