Waiwera Hotel, 1877

Waiwera Hotel, 1877

Waiwera, 48 kilometres north of Auckland, was developed as a thermal spa from 1848 by entrepreneur Robert Graham. In 1875 he built a comfortable hotel there, and Waiwera became a popular holiday destination for Aucklanders. As well as bathing in the thermal springs, they could enjoy the sea views. In this 1877 painting by John Kinder, guests relax on the hotel verandah.
