In advancing into Waikato, Lieutenant-General Duncan Cameron made full use of the river to transport supplies. Some steamers were reinforced with iron plates and used as gunboats to attack pā. In this image, the gunboat Pioneer is firing on the pā at Meremere in August 1863.
