Octavius Hadfield preaching at Rangiatea Church

The crowning glory of Octavius Hadfield's Church of England mission at Otaki was Rangiatea Church, built in 1849 by Maori converts under the direction of Tamihana Te Rauparaha. This interior view by Charles Decimus Barraud exaggerates the height of its supporting pillars, which were nevertheless impressively tall. Hadfield is shown in the pulpit.
