A 1994 study found that 227 of the 269 diaries (84%) in central urban and suburban Auckland were owned by Indians. Dairies offer an independent, if self-sacrificial, way to own your own business. Many are run as family enterprises, with the business profitability dependent upon family labour and long opening hours.
