The average amount owed on credit cards, both personal and business, at the end of March each year is shown here. The per person figure is reached by dividing the total owed by the number of people resident in New Zealand that year. Between 1994/95 and 2000/2001 the average credit-card debt per person doubled from about $400 to about $800. The figure reached $1,000 in 2004, and continued to rise. (Data converted to 2006 values.)
