In 1969 international visitor numbers increased by 12.5%, largely due to the growth of air travel. The government was keen to tap into the closest international market: Australia. Australians were told that they were just two-and-a-half hours and a five-course meal away from the 'lively, new, sophisticated, swinging New Zealand'.
