Hinemihi meeting house at Te Wairoa is half-buried after Mt Tarawera erupted in 1886. Over 100 people were killed, and the misery of the local people was compounded by the adverse effects on the tourist industry. Ironically, Te Wairoa is now a tourist attraction known as the Buried Village.
