Hochstetter’s frogs like to hide under stones in damp ground near streams, such as this one near Whakatāne, that are shaded by native forest. They lay eggs in wet patches close to the stream, and do not guard them. The hatched young – halfway between a tadpole and a froglet – flip in and out of shallow water.
