Pakihi heathland, Ōkārito

Pakihi are treeless expanses of sedges, rushes, ferns and shrubs. Commonly found on poorly drained, infertile soils on the West Coast of New Zealand, many formerly carried forest. The main shrubs here are mānuka and tāmingi (Epacris pauciflora), a heath.
