During the Second World War the government controlled most sectors of the country’s economy. The Department of Agriculture directed primary production, including traditional products such as meat, wool and dairy, as well as vegetables. These men are harvesting cabbages at Ōtaki, north of Wellington, in 1945. The ground was formerly a sports field, but was being used to grow food for US troops stationed in New Zealand.
