This map published in the New Zealand Herald newspaper in November 1905 shows Crown and Māori land in the North Island. The advertisement claims that 3.4 million acres (1.2 million hectares) of Māori land is ‘locked up’ in Auckland province alone – land that could be converted into 17,000 new farms and homesteads for Pākehā settlers, ‘the happy homes of an industrious and prosperous rural population’.
