Michael Pearce started the menswear label Equipment in Auckland in 1982. The label's look was masculine and fairly rugged, with simple lines and no embellishments. Pearce's clothes often appeared in fashion magazine ChaCha and he styled the shoots. Equipment wound up in 1988, after the previous year's damaging sharemarket crash.
