Story: Māori weaving and tukutuku – te raranga me te whatu

Tāniko panels, Porourangi meeting house

Tāniko panels, Porourangi meeting house

On the right of this photograph, of an inside wall of Porourangi meeting house at Waiōmatatini on the East Coast, a tāniko panel is missing. The gap has been temporarily filled with paper. It is possible that the photo was taken as the panels were being installed. The three panels visible display the representational shapes, names and other innovations that make Porourangi a showcase of weaving and other traditional, yet evolving, Māori arts.
