These pages are drawn from the first issue of The Phoenix, a journal published by the Literary Club of Auckland University College. The editor was James Bertram and the magazine was printed by Bob Lowry. The pages reproduced here include all the poems of the first number. Their authors – R. A. K. Mason, Charles Brasch and Allen Curnow – were among the most influential poets of the so-called 'Phoenix generation'.
