Wirihana Puna was a lieutenant during the New Zealand wars under Te Keepa Te Rangihiwinui (Major Kemp) in Whanganui. Wirihana lived at Aramoho and was probably the Wirihana who was referred to in an account of the Wanganui County team that took on the Wanganui Town team at Aramoho in 1872 – the first recorded instance of a Māori player playing rugby.
