This 1880 picture shows Te Aute College students, some of whom are holding cricket bats. While cricket was played at Te Aute, it was difficult to develop players as the long summer holidays, when the boys went home, came in the middle of the cricket season. Cricket has always been a comparatively unpopular game among Māori.
