Māori traditions of hospitality require that everybody staying on a marae must be well fed, even though the number of guests is usually uncertain and fluctuating. Catering for hui is therefore one of the most important and demanding responsibilities of marae committee members. These volunteer cooks at Raukawa marae in Ōtaki are preparing to feed hungry marchers during a 2004 hīkoi (march) to Parliament in protest against the Foreshore and Seabed Bill.
