Māori horse racing: Karioi meeting

A poster advertises a Māori race meeting to be held at Karioi, south of Raglan, Waikato, on New Year's Day 1870. Māori took to horse racing when it was introduced to New Zealand, and there was often a race for Māori-owned horses at meetings. The Karioi races, however, were completely organised by Māori, under the patronage of the Māori King. This poster, with amended venue, date and personnel, was used by other Māori racing clubs.
