The first test between the British Lions and the All Blacks in Dunedin in 1959 became one of the most famous matches between the two teams. The Lions, with a fast backline, scored four tries, only one of which was converted and, since at that time a try only earned three points, not five, they finished with a score of 17 (they also scored one penalty). But the Lions gave away 21 penalties, and All Black fullback Don Clarke kicked six penalty goals to bring the All Blacks a win on the score-sheet by 18 to 17. The general opinion was, however, that they had ‘lost’ in all but the score. If modern scoring was applied, the Lions would have won 25–18.
