Story: Personal grooming

Hairdressing competition, 1964

Video file

The hugely bouffant styles that became fashionable in the 1960s are shown in this 1964 film of New Zealand’s first national hairdressing competition, held in Lower Hutt. Although there was a gulf between the styles produced by hairdressers on models or actresses and those worn by women who did their own hair, simpler versions of these styles were standard.
