Jet sprinting began in New Zealand in the early 1980s. It originally used courses on designated sections of braided rivers such as this one on the Waimakariri River, 1984. New Zealand jet sprinters have now adopted the Australian system of using purpose-built shallow-water jet-sprint tracks.
