Spectators watch the National Jet Sprint series at Meremere, on 17 February 2008. Jet sprinting has become a popular sport in New Zealand, with national and international competitions. World championships have been held since 1988. New Zealanders have made up the majority of the competitors, but since the mid-1990s more Australian and US boats have competed.
