Story: Māori housing – te noho whare

Māori house plan

In 1954 the Department of Māori Affairs issued a number of standard plans for the construction of Māori housing. They resembled the state rental houses built for (mainly) Pākehā tenants, with modern features such as built-in wardrobes. The absence of a prescribed dining area suggests that eating, in this house at least, was to be carried out in the kitchen.
