In the early 1980s the Waitangi Tribunal heard a claim by Te Āti Awa of Taranaki concerning a proposed development that would pollute their traditional resources of seafood. The kuia of Te Āti Awa depicted in this photographic series by acclaimed artist Fiona Clark are gathering kaimoana from the area near the proposed outfall from the Motunui synthetic petrol plant. In 1983 the tribunal upheld the Te Āti Awa claim, with important consequences for subsequent industrial projects.
