John White (standing), the nephew of a Wesleyan missionary, was raised in Hokianga in the early 19th century and spoke fluent Māori. In the early 1860s he worked as a resident magistrate in the Whanganui region. Hōri Kīngi Te Ānaua (left) was a government official and Te Ua Haumēne founded the Pai Mārire religion.
