In this mission station on the beachfront at Kohimarama (later Mission Bay), Auckland, the government called a national conference of chiefs in 1860. The conference aimed to defuse the anti-government feeling growing among Taranaki Māori, and to restate the commitment of both parties to the Treaty of Waitangi.
