Story: Antarctica and New Zealand

Victoria University of Wellington has been sending groups of students and academics down to Antarctica since 1957, setting up an Antarctic Research Centre (ARC) in New Zealand in 1972. The ARC is a world leader in research into Antarctica’s past climate, its influence on global climate change, and polar scientific drilling technology and operations. Colin Bull, a geophysicist and glaciologist, went to Antarctica as part of a Victoria University party in 1958–59. He is shown here inking the pens of meteorological instruments in December 1958.
