Cyprian Bridge's watercolour shows British troops under Lieutenant-Colonel William Hulme attacking Hōne Heke Pōkai's new at Puketutu on 8 May 1845. Troops and allied Māori wait in reserve in the foreground. Hulme called off the attack when men led by Te Ruki Kawiti, who had been hiding in bush outside the , and Heke counter-attacked from different directions.
