This drawing, derived from a sketch, shows Kororāreka (Russell) from the sea on 10 March 1845. The very next day Ngāpuhi leaders Heke Hōne Pōkai and Te Ruki Kawiti led about 450 men in an attack on the town, which the British abandoned before most of it was destroyed by fire.
