The 1977 New Zealand movie Sleeping dogs, based on the novel Smith’s dream by C. K. Stead, was a political thriller that portrayed a conflict between revolutionaries and a right-wing authoritarian state. This reflected contrasting political outlooks and values as the country began its nine-year period of government under the leadership of National Prime Minister Robert Muldoon.
