A famous saying that describes the region of the Tainui peoples begins: ‘Mōkau is above, Tāmaki is below’. Accordingly, this map, which shows the area settled by tribes who trace their descent from the voyagers of the Tainui canoe, is oriented south to north. The map also shows the route and landing places of the canoe within Tainui territory, and the places of significance to the Tainui people. The Tainui canoe first landed at Whangaparāoa, in the Bay of Plenty.
