Story: United States and New Zealand

In 1966 US President Lyndon Johnson arrived at Ōhakea airport to begin a 24-hour visit to New Zealand. It was during the early stages of New Zealand's involvement in the Vietnam War, but as this film shows, he received a warm welcome. Protesters were few and barely visible. The president's personal charisma and the fact that he had visited the country during the Second World War helped to engender popular enthusiasm.
