This wreath was laid at the national war memorial carillon in Wellington on 20 October 1966 by Lyndon Johnson, the first United States president to visit New Zealand. The laying of the wreath expressed Johnson's consciousness of New Zealand's role in assisting the US and the Allies during two world wars. He undoubtedly hoped that this tradition would be maintained by an expanded New Zealand involvement in the Vietnam War.
