Memorials to the 1940 centennial of British sovereignty in New Zealand were given a central government subsidy. The government encouraged memorials that had a useful purpose, such as this one in Kaponga, Taranaki. This memorial served as the local Plunket rooms, where young mothers would visit with their babies to receive encouragement and advice. The building is in the Moderne style then popular in New Zealand.
