Story: Ngāi Tūhoe

Te Tira Hou marae, Auckland

Image
Te Tira Hou marae, Auckland

The name of this Auckland marae is taken from the lines of a popular Tūhoe waiata, ‘Tēnei te tira hou, tēnei te hara mai nei’, which means ‘Here is the new travelling party coming along’. The marae has been a place of refuge for many young Tūhoe who moved to Auckland seeking work. In November 2003 the marae celebrated its 30th anniversary and many former members attended, some coming from as far away as Australia.

Kia Ora, St Dominics Catholic Girls college has a Kapa Haka with students that have never experienced being in a Marae. What I was hoping was if we could bring our students to your Marae so they can experience this for themselves, which I know they would be greatly appreciated. The last time I came to your Marae with Te Wananga o Aotearoa, we learnt how to weave and sang songs, then finished off with a hangi, a totally wonderful experience. Could you kindly email me please advising whether this would be possible please. Many thanks Marie
