Wellington is famed for its creative sector. The New Zealand International Arts Festival (later known as the Aotearoa New Zealand Festival of the Arts) has been held in venues around Wellington every two years since 1986. This is an advertisement for the 2004 festival. Since the 1990s Wellington has also hosted a fringe festival alongside the main festival.
During the COVID-19 epidemic, festival organisers worked hard to continue to hold parts of the festival. In 2020, 95% of the festival went ahead, but in 2022 much of the festival had to be rapidly reorganised to focus on outdoor events and on a digital platform to allow people to view events online.
