Since the 1990s central city areas like Te Aro have undergone considerable change. Many old buildings have been demolished, replaced by office and apartment buildings. In Garrett Street, only a few 19th-century houses, once typical of the area, remain. In 2007 the future of these dwellings was uncertain.
