The contribution made by a marriage partner who stayed at home, running the household, rearing children, caring for the employed partner, and possibly assisting him or her in their work, was recognised in 1976. In 2002 the law was altered to include stay-at-home partners in de facto relationships (both same-sex and heterosexual) and, later, civil unions.
