These children, who have tuberculosis (TB), are sunbathing outside at the Cashmere Hills Sanatorium. Exposure to sunlight was a core component of the treatment regime. From the 1940s effective drugs and vaccines were available, and all TB sanatoriums were closed by the 1960s.
