After years of work building the access road and ski facilities, the Tūroa field, on the south-west side of Mt Ruapehu, opened in 1979. This 1983 video clip shows young skiers enjoying the slopes.

Turoa ski field opened in 1966. Owned and operated by June and John Broadbent. Mr Broadbent also helped form the upper parts of the mountain road.
