Story: Whanganui region

Coastal shipping

Video file

In this 1948 film clip the Breeze travels from Wellington up the west coast to Whanganui – the Whanganui River mouth can be seen on the two charts being inspected at the end of the clip. Coastal shipping like this diminished in importance as roads improved, and with the 1962 introduction of a roll-on, roll-off ferry service between the North and South islands. The film's voice-over was written by the poet Denis Glover.
