Story: Ngā hāhi – Māori and Christian denominations

This pencil sketch of Te Kooti, founder of the Ringatū Church, is regarded as one of the most authentic and life-like images of the prophet. It is dated 1887 and indicates that Te Kooti was then visiting at the great Te Arawa meeting house of Tamatekapua in Ōhinemutu, Rotorua. In that period Te Kooti visited several central North Island centres to spread word of his new religion and try to heal the ill-feeling with local people dating from his earlier conflict with them.
