Image
Pareora freezing works

Opened in 1904, the Pareora Freezing Works is one of two meat-processing plants in the region – Smithfield at Washdyke is the other. The red hue in the sea is effluent from the works.

I see in the picture that the offal pipe still drops out to sea I went to Campbell live in winter 2005 about this and they came and took pictures for Campbell live but it had snowed They told us that it was going to be spray irrigated onto the paddocks up on top off hill Looks like nothing has changed if this photo is just been taken The local council said they were getting onto it and sent me all the pages they had on it about 70 pages just like a book Maybe have to get Campbell live back on the job I now live in Auckland but am still interested on what has happened I got onto them as Pukuri Works in Oamaru had to stop putting theirs into the sea and had to build withholding ponds Regards Mike Smith
