Holiday makers in the 1960s enjoy the sun at Cornwallis Beach. The Auckland City Council had allowed people to build baches (holiday houses) – under a questionable leasing arrangement – at Cornwallis Park since 1915. Tenants paid an annual rent and could build a home to the value of £25. Owners believed the lease was in perpetuity, but in the late 1960s the council told them to leave. Some people had become permanent residents, and there had been complaints about owners being hostile to the general public using the beach. By the end of 1970 all the baches had gone.
