This sketch shows Captain Jeremiah Nagle’s home and shipyard on Great Barrier Island (Aotea) in 1847. Nagle had arrived in New Zealand in 1838 and bought 20,000 acres (8,000 hectares) on the island with William Abercrombie and William Webster. Nagle was among the island’s first European residents.
