Story: Income and wealth distribution

Weekly income by ethnicity

Image
Weekly income by ethnicity

This table shows the median (middle) income for people aged 15 and over by declared ethnic group in the 2013 census. The low income of Asian people is due to the inclusion of many Asian students (in New Zealand temporarily) and by their relatively young age. The ethnicity categorisations are self-reported, so where a person nominates two or more ethnicities they appear in several categories. Note that most of those in the 'Other' category stated that they were 'New Zealanders' on the census form.
