Story: Barraud, Charles Decimus

Baptism of Te Puni

This 1853 painting by Charles Barraud depicts the baptism of Te Puni-kōkopu (centre) by Anglican missionary Octavius Hadfield at Rangiātea Church in Ōtaki. Governor George Grey (fifth from right) also appears, along with his wife Eliza. It was one of Barraud's most important early commissions, and some historians have speculated that the bearded figure on the extreme right is a self-portrait of the artist himself.
